"The combination of the rich user experience of Flex 2 and the productivity of ColdFusion MX 7 provides the fastest, easiest way to create rich Internet applications. Adobe has created a deep level of integration and productivity tools for Flex and ColdFusion making it easy for ColdFusion developers to get started and become productive building Flex applications."
In addition to the company's primary Flex 2 announcement, the company made two updates available for Flex/ColdFusion development:
ColdFusion Extensions for Flex Builder 2
The ColdFusion Extensions for Flex Builder 2 boosts developer productivity, enabling them to perform common coding tasks in a fraction of the time, the company says. Included are: a collection of powerful wizards that automatically generate code and applications; a Remote Development Services (RDS) module; and a Services Browser for web services and CFC introspection.
Wizards
Using a collection of “wizards”, ColdFusion developers can automatically generate Flex applications using existing CFCs, or even just database tables. Alternatively, CFCs can be generated from Flex UIs.
1. CFC to Actionscript wizard –creates an ActionScript file based on a ColdFusion component (CFC) Value Object.
2. Actionscript to CFC wizard - creates a CFC based on an ActionScript class file.
3. RDS CRUD wizard - The Remote Development Services (RDS) Create/Read/Update/Delete (CRUD) Wizard creates a CFC based on a table that is registered in the ColdFusion Administrator on a ColdFusion server.
4. ColdFusion / Flex application wizard – generates a complete Flex application from a database query, including CFCs, Actionscript and MXML.
Remote Development Services (RDS)
Remote Development Services (RDS) lets developers access files and data sources registered in the ColdFusion Administrator on a ColdFusion server. (RDS must be enabled during ColdFusion installation.) The Eclipse RDS plugin makes it easy to access ColdFusion files remotely, view datasources, and use the visual SQL query builder. Eclipse RDS Support is supported on all ColdFusion server platforms.
Services Browser
The ColdFusion Services Browser enables developers to view CFCs and web services. Developers can manage a ready-to-use list of web services by adding or deleting WSDL URLs from a list. While editing a ColdFusion file, the Services Browser can be used to generate CFML code to invoke a web service or to create a web service object. Similarly, while editing an ActionScript file, the Services Browser can generate ActionScript code to invoke a web service or web service object.
ColdFusion MX 7 Updater 2 (ColdFusion MX 7.0.2)
With this updater, developers have easy access to ColdFusion components from within Flex. The updater includes:
A new version of Flash Remoting - enabling CFC functions to be called from a Flex 2 application to provide simple access to all of the back-end services available from ColdFusion—database access, web services, POP/SMTP, file systems and more.
Flex Message Gateway - A new ColdFusion Event Gateway type that can be used within a Flex application to specify a ColdFusion event gateway as a destination for messages; similarly, a ColdFusion application can use an Event Gateway to send events to a Flex application. ColdFusion simply provides the easiest way to create a publish-subscribe messaging application using Flex.
Flex Data Services assembler – enabling the use of Flex Data Management Services with ColdFusion components (CFCs).
